The Mississippi River has a detour route via Louisiana's Atchafalaya River. It's a braided, bayou'd, bottomlanded, cypressed corridor of southern wilderness, complete with untouched back channels, industrial remnants, hanging moss, fishing shacks, and a flora and fauna biodiversity to rival anywhere in North America. We paddled the length of it in a handmade canoe with river guide and conservation champion, John Ruskey and crew.
