STORIES / Lionfish
“The lionfish will start to take over the whole bottom, you know.”
Lyons

The lionfish arrived from the Asian Pacific waters to the South Atlantic and Caribbean in the 1990's. The voracious eaters decimate reef fish populations, an ecological and economic disaster. In Jamaica, many young men make a modest living as free-diving spearfishermen. Chefs have learned to prepare the meat, so there's a new demand for the lionfish. Spearfishermen like Karrinton Lyons can protect their reefs and make money by catching the lionfish.
